NSERC PermafrostNet ERDDAP

ERDDAP is a data server that gives you a simple, consistent way to download subsets of scientific datasets in common file formats and make graphs and maps. This particular ERDDAP installation has permafrost data (for example, data from borehole logs and temperature loggers).

Individual Datasets

Each borehole or study site is given its own dataset. This makes it easy to provide detailed metadata for each location which means searching for specific data using the advanced search is more likely to return what you are looking for. Datasets are distributed on this ERDDAP for convenient downloading using either interactively using the web interface or from the REST API using a scripting language. Each dataset contains metadata describing its provenance and relevant citation information. In addition to providing access to data that has been generated or digitized by NSERC PermafrostNet, this ERDDAP provides access to data from other permafrost data providers [1, 2] that has been dis-aggregated to site-level.

Aggregated Datasets

The individual 'site-level' datsets have been combined into large aggregations that can be subsetted, queried and downloaded using the ERDDAP capabilities. Data can only be aggregated if they have the same spatio-temporal dimensions. Currently two large aggregated datasets exist:
  • Ground Temperature: A collection of ground temperature data.
  • Borehole Profiles: A collection of 'profile' data mostly consisting of borehole logs from geotechnical drilling.

Standards

PermafrostNet has adopted several metadata standards for use with the ERDDAP. For a full description of the metadata variables used on each dataset, refer to the PermafrostNet metadata profile. This profile adopts metadata attributes from the Attribute Convention for Data Discovery (ACDD) and the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) to increase interoperability. It also defines metadata attribute names for permafrost-specific site characterization metadata that are commonly found across multiple permafrost databases. These include vegetation type (vegetation_type) and whether permafrost is present (permafrost_status).

Advantages to accessing data on ERDDAP

  1. Data access can be automated, shared, and re-used. Using the REST API, data access can be incorporated into your data analysis workflow.
  2. ERDDAP supports more complex queries. For example, using the search parameters on the dataset access page you can look for all boreholes that have Vx ground ice class recorded or all locations that have ground temperature records deeper than 15 m

Metadata
ERDDAP has an
FGDC Web Accessible Folder (WAF) with FGDC‑STD‑001‑1998 (external link) metadata files and an
ISO 19115 Web Accessible Folder (WAF) with ISO 19115‑2/19139 (external link) metadata files for all of the geospatial datasets in this ERDDAP.

RESTful Web Services
You can bypass ERDDAP's web pages and use ERDDAP's RESTful web services (for example, for searching for datasets, for downloading data, for making maps) directly from any computer program (for example, Matlab, R, or a program that you write) and even from web pages (via HTML image tags or JavaScript). Other Features

Status The Status web page is a quick way to check the current status/health of this ERDDAP, including a list of datasets which failed to load.
Out-Of-Date Datasets The Out-Of-Date Datasets web page displays a list of near-real-time datasets, ranked by how out-of-date they are.
Subscriptions ERDDAP has an email/URL subscription system so that you can be notified immediately whenever a dataset changes (for example, whenever new data is added to a near-real-time dataset).
Slide Sorter Anyone can use ERDDAP's Slide Sorter to build a personal web page that displays graphs with the latest data (or other images or HTML content), each in its own, draggable slide.
